FUEL CELL TECHNOLOGY
The fuel cell technology is currently under utilized in South Africa and yet has a great potential to overtake the market due to it simplicity and flexibility while yielding significant power output. Since a fuel cell is essentially like a normal battery that is used on thousands of different applications, it can also be applied in a similar manner in the market to provide power and energy solutions in a clean and continuous manner as it is not affected by weather or climatic conditions, seasons and day-night cycles. The main difference between a normal battery and a fuel cell is that the battery has a limited life where upon, the power stored in it is depleted, it is disposed of or recharged from an outside source. Where as the fuel cell generates it’s own power indefinitely as long as it has it’s continuous supply of fuel in the form of Hydrogen Gas.
FUEL CELL TECHNOLOGY – APPLICATION
The Fuel Cell Technology application depends on the scale and the objective of the project.
This technology can be used as a reliable power back up system in urban and rural installations in place of the usual generator system or battery system. It has been proven that the advantages of fuel cell technology far outweighs those of a generator and batteries in terms of cost, maintenance and environmental compliance.
The equipment can be stored in an indoor environment requiring minimal space or in outdoor environment stored in steel shipping containers or secure metallic cubicles. The system will be operated freely under unmanned conditions as it is self sufficient.
Fuel cell technology can also be applied as a totally off grid system and can operate reliably independent of any utility grid and where the hydrogen supply and replacement cylinders is less frequent, it would only require constant water supply and mixed renewable technology such as PV Solar and Wind Power to provide support in any eventuality.
The system is custom designed for different applications in the light industrial, commercial and domestic environment such as small factories, shopping malls and households all of different types and sizes. This would include rural telecommunications infrastructure where there is limited utility grid coverage or none at all.
The system would be packaged in modules of 2.4kW and bundled to 9.4kW free standing cubicles. The cubicles are modular in nature and can be expanded to any required size, typically in 9.4kW denominations, to 18.8kW, 28.2kW etc.
The modules of the fuel cell cubicles can be expanded from approximately 500kW – 5MW of capacity at the clients disposal and demand on a 24hrs basis, in any of the above explained environments.
In certain instances under critical load conditions a double conversion on line UPS may be used to prevent dips during the transition from either supply source or technology type.
